Johnson, GOP leadership speak after House passes Trump-backed voter ID bill

Описание: U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson is providing more details on the successful passage of the SAVE America Act. The bill aims to prevent noncitizens from voting in elections. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, Whip Tom Emmer, Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain, Committee on House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil, and Rep. Chip Roy also joined Speaker Johnson in support of the legislation. The House of Representatives passed the election integrity overhaul bill on Wednesday despite opposition from a majority of Democrats.

The legislation will now have to pass the Senate, where current rules dictate that at least a few Democrats are needed to meet the 60-vote threshold to overcome a filibuster.

"If we want to rebuild confidence again in American elections, we need to pass the SAVE Act," Rep. Mike Haridopolos of Florida previously told Fox News Digital. "What better way to eliminate that distrust than to make sure that whoever votes in an American citizen who is truly eligible to vote?" Reports indicate that if implemented, the bill could see new requirements imposed on voters in this year's November midterm elections.
