The 1978 Monaco Grand Prix turned into one of the most dramatic races of the decade — a true showcase of attrition, skill, and strategy on the streets of Monte Carlo. Starting from pole, Ferrari’s Carlos Reutemann failed to get off the line when the lights went green, immediately creating chaos behind him. The stalled Ferrari was clipped by Niki Lauda and James Hunt at Sainte Devote, while John Watson seized the opportunity to snatch the lead from second on the grid. Patrick Depailler’s Tyrrell rocketed into second place, passing Hunt and Lauda even before Reutemann’s car started moving.

The opening laps were pure bedlam. Reutemann, Hunt, and Lauda all sustained damage, forcing early pit stops. Reutemann limped to the pits with a punctured rear-left tyre, while Hunt’s McLaren needed a new nose cone. Watson led the first lap ahead of Depailler and Lauda, while Mario Andretti headed a tight midfield battle with Jody Scheckter, Alan Jones, Ronnie Peterson, and Gilles Villeneuve close behind. Several drivers — including Jacques Laffite and Hans-Joachim Stuck — would soon retire with mechanical problems or collisions, emphasizing how brutal the Monaco circuit could be.
Depailler kept relentless pressure on Watson through the first half of the race. The Frenchman’s Tyrrell 008, with its sleek new design and ground effect innovation, seemed surprisingly fast against the Brabham-Alfa Romeo. Meanwhile, Lauda maintained his usual precision, waiting patiently in third. Behind them, Jones’ Williams began leaking oil, eventually sending him into the wall at Sainte Devote.
At half-distance, the tension exploded. Watson’s brakes overheated under the constant pressure from Depailler, forcing him to overshoot the chicane and surrender the lead. Depailler took command of the race, while Lauda moved up to second. However, Lauda’s chance to challenge for the win vanished on lap 45 when a puncture forced him into the pits. The Austrian rejoined in sixth, far behind.
Depailler now held a comfortable lead as attrition continued to decimate the field. Hunt retired with suspension failure, while Peterson’s gearbox failure ended his race. Scheckter’s Wolf climbed to third, but Lauda — charging on fresh tyres — began closing fast. In the final laps, Lauda caught and passed Scheckter at Rascasse with just two laps remaining, securing second place.
Patrick Depailler crossed the finish line to claim his first-ever Formula 1 victory, and Tyrrell’s first win of the season. Lauda finished second, with Scheckter completing the podium despite gearbox issues. Watson salvaged fourth ahead of Didier Pironi and Riccardo Patrese.
It was a masterful drive from Depailler — fast, consistent, and calm under pressure — marking a breakthrough moment in his career and a triumphant day for Tyrrell.
