Описание: Ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix, tensions escalated between FISA, Formula One’s governing body, and FOCA, which represented most of the teams on the grid. The conflict centered on a newly imposed mandatory pre-race drivers’ briefing ordered by FISA president Jean-Marie Balestre. Acting on instructions from Bernie Ecclestone, FOCA drivers boycotted the briefings in Belgium and Monaco, accusing FISA of favoring manufacturer teams. In response, Balestre suspended 15 drivers’ superlicences and demanded fines be paid personally, rejecting attempts by race organizers to settle the dispute on the drivers’ behalf.

The Race delivered one of the most chaotic and attrition-filled races of the season. Carlos Reutemann launched brilliantly from the second row to seize the lead, with Williams teammate Alan Jones quickly slotting into second. The Ligier pair of Didier Pironi and Jacques Laffite followed, while Nelson Piquet kept close watch in the Brabham.

Williams initially controlled the pace, but the race soon unraveled into a sequence of dramatic incidents. Early accidents eliminated several drivers, including heavy crashes for David Kennedy and Derek Daly, while mechanical failures struck Keke Rosberg and Alain Prost. Jones briefly lost ground after a missed gear, allowing the Ligiers and Piquet to move ahead.

The turning point came when Reutemann and Laffite, battling for the lead, collided with backmarker Emilio de Villota while lapping traffic, eliminating both frontrunners instantly. Piquet inherited the lead, only to retire shortly afterward with gearbox failure, handing control to Pironi. Yet reliability struck again: Pironi’s front-left wheel detached late in the race, cruelly ending his charge.

Jones, nursing overheating issues but staying out of trouble, found himself back in front. With the field decimated and multiple late retirements behind him, the Australian held on to claim a hard-fought victory. Jochen Mass finished second for Arrows, followed by Elio de Angelis, Jean-Pierre Jarier, Emerson Fittipaldi, and a battered de Villota — only six cars reaching the finish in a Grand Prix defined by chaos, collisions, and survival.
