The 1981 Monaco Grand Prix took place on May 31, and quickly established itself as one of the most dramatic and unpredictable events of the 1981 Formula One season. Run through the tight, unforgiving streets of the Circuit de Monaco, the Monaco Grand Prix 1981 served as the sixth round of the Formula 1 World Championship, once again proving why the Monaco GP remains the ultimate test of control, precision, and strategy in Formula One.

Qualifying for the 1981 Monaco Grand Prix was led by Brazilian driver Nelson Piquet, who secured pole position for Brabham-Ford, underlining his strong form in the early phase of the 1981 Formula One season. At the start of the Monaco GP, Piquet converted pole into the lead, immediately setting the pace on the narrow streets of Monte Carlo. Behind him, Gilles Villeneuve kept his Ferrari firmly in contention, even though the Italian car was not considered the fastest package in Formula 1 at that stage of the year.
For much of the race, the 1981 Monaco Grand Prix appeared firmly under Piquet’s control. However, the decisive moment arrived on lap 54, when the Brabham struck the barriers while leading, abruptly ending his charge. The incident reshaped the entire Monaco Grand Prix 1981. Soon after, Alan Jones also lost momentum due to fuel issues, removing another frontrunner from the fight for victory.
Those developments handed the advantage to Gilles Villeneuve, who assumed the lead and began managing the race with measured precision through the closing laps of the Monaco GP. He crossed the finish line to secure victory in the 1981 Monaco Grand Prix, earning his first win at Monaco and delivering Ferrari’s first Monaco triumph since 1979. The success made Villeneuve the only Canadian driver ever to win a Formula One race in Monte Carlo, a unique distinction in Formula 1 history.
Villeneuve was joined on the podium by Alan Jones in second place and Jacques Laffite in third for Ligier-Matra, completing a result shaped as much by attrition as by speed.
