Coming up an interview with 80s icon Paul Young about his #1 hit Every Time you Go Away that has one of the funniest misheard lyrics of all time. As a kid I botched it until i was corrected… Also many people don’t realize it’s actually a cover song. A cover of song originally written and recorded by one of the most successful groups ever, Daryl Hall and John Oates. Daryl Hall says he didn’t think the song was commercial at all, so it was destined to be a deep album track but just a few years later Paul Young saw its commercial potential and took it to #1. The story and interview on this 1985 #1 hit is next on professor of rock.

I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs and albums. Stories you won’t find anywhere else. Sometime an artist can write a song and be too close to it to recognize it’s hit potential. That’s exactly happened with the 1985 #1 hit Every Time You Go Away by multiplatinum artist Paul Young… Every time You Go Away was written years before by Daryl Hall and recorded by all time duo Daryl Hall and John Oates. But Daryl thought it was a deep cut and buried it on side 2 of their 1980 album voices. He said he was just doing a kind of gospel soul song and that it wasn’t anything really special. Then Paul Young redefined it into an 80s pop soul smash. But his #1 success didn’t leave Daryl Hall with any regret.
He credited Paul Young with tapping into the commercial potential that Hall himself hadn’t seen when he wrote it. Hall would actually say and I quite. "I never thought of it any other way than the way it was 'til Paul Young did it ... I was just doin' a kind of gospel/soul song; that was all I had in mind for it. I was really surprised to hear the production they did because it kept the elements but commercialized it - made it sound like a pop record.” Paul Young released it on his 1985 album The Secret of Association. His cover had a diverse combination of echoed piano, the Yamaha DX7's "harp" preset, the distinctive fretless bass of Pino Palladino, as well as a Coral electric sitar, and Ovation Spanish acoustic guitar which were both played perfectly by John Turnbull. It went to #1 on the Hot 100 and the AC charts and #4 in the UK. It also has one of the funniest misheard lyrics ever.
When I heard it I thought he was saying every time you go away you take a piece of meat with you! In fact my sister and I were so confused. We were like why does she take a piece of meat with her? are they always meeting at a barbecue. At first I thought I was the only one that heard it that way… Like maybe it was just an Idaho thing. Well I Googled it and it’s in hundreds of articles for the funniest misheard lyrics including a funny piece from the New Yorker that had illustrations… Also it’s grammatically incorrect.
