It’s time for another edition of our Show Revelations where artists and bands take us for a deep dive into their greatest songs and albums. Facts and behind-the-scenes stories you won’t find anywhere else. Today is one I waited a long time to sit down with.

First of all, When I was a young kid about 7 years old I heard this band on the radio. They had 2 songs that were played all of the time and these 2 songs were so haunting, so evocative and mysterious that I was pulled in by their stirring strangeness, by their otherworldly charm. They were a band that matched their name. Dark, Vampy, Mystical, transient, and cryptic… The Motels. They were a New Wave institution. led by the esoteric vocals of lead singer Martha Davis This band seemed to come out of nowhere.

From the underground, they attacked the charts first with their #9 smash Only the Lonely and then hit #1 a year later on the rock charts and sped up the pop charts with their perplexing new wave hit Suddenly Last Summer which is today’s focus. This band had four hits.. the 2 I just mentioned and then Remember the Nights and Shame but they had at least four other songs that were radio favorites like Take the L, Shock, and Total Control.

I remember being completely mesmerized by their music, especially the truly spooky song Celia where Martha did the unthinkable for a female singer and drop the F-bomb about a jealous boyfriend who is so far gone he’s about to come unglued and cut his beautiful girlfriend's face.

This was not your fun 80s pop princess, this was a singer with grit and realness. Martha Davis pulled you in as a listener and showed you the whole story no holds barred. I was always transfixed by her female Doors meets Seedy Los Angeles vamp that made them one of the most underappreciated and misunderstood bands of the time.

Then after the mid-80s this band pretty much vanished from radio… Up next Martha Davis and original band member Mary Jourard will demystify this band and their biggest hit.
