We play them all the time, but somehow they missed the Top 40, and Most are better than the biggest hits of the year. I’ve got the story of Prince's gut-wrenching ballad that has been rumored to be about three different women. It was written in a late-night session as a last-minute track for one of the most unforgettable films of 1984. But who is it really about? There’s also a classic song by rock icon Ian McCulloch that was so divinely inspired the songwriter literally gave half the songwriting credit to God. Plus, there’s the folk rock legend Leonard Cohen, who spent years and 80 verses trying to write his masterpiece. He went so mad over this song, and one night, while in a hotel room in his underwear, he started bashing his head on the floor trying to figure it out. Hey Music Junkies It’s time to countdown the top 10 non hits of the greatest year in music…1984…Heading into the #10 spot it’s the title track to The Cars’ 4th album Heartbeat City. For band’s first four albums, Roy Thomas Baker was the go-to producer. But for Heartbeat City, The Cars were looking to “shake it up” and partnered with "Mutt" Lange. The guys lived in London for over 6 months, grinding through Mutt’s brutal recording bootcamp. The experience took it’s toll on the band and they would ultimately break up a few years later. In the meantime, the album reached #3 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 5 million copies in the US. It was the most commercially successful studio album of their career. Only topped by their 6 times platinum Greatest Hits record a year later. Heartbeat City produced 5 Top 40 singles including Top 10s You Might Think and Drive. Other singles included Magic, Hello Again, Why Can’t I Have You, and Heartbeat City.

Heartbeat City is the longest track on the record, coming in at 4:31. An early demo went by the name Jacki. You can hear that version on the 2018 Expanded Edition the the album. Ric Ocasek sings lead on the track. He also wrote the lyrics. And typical of Ocasek, the song boasts plenty of quirky phrases… from “happy days count on thumbs” to “the noise electric never stops” to “better catch the blue caboose.” A deep dive into the archives of the internet turns up very little information on track… And you can forget about any official interpretation of the song from the frontman…But the sonic vibe of "Heartbeat City" is enough to keep you hitting repeat. It’s a cool, highly synthesized slice of 80s new wave. Driven by a hypnotic beat and futuristic effects, the song transports you into this haunting 80s urban dreamscape.

Heartbeat City dropped as the album’s final single in September 1985. However, it completely stiffed in America. It was the only one of the albums six singles to not to break into the Hot 100 Top 40. In fact, it didn’t place on the Hot 100 at all. A shout out to the UK and Australia where it at least placed on the mainstream charts. And if you’re tempted to think that, this was just some random single tacked on to the end of the album’s release cycle… consider this… The band thought enough of this track to play it as their Live Aid closer in 1985. They only had enough time for 4 songs, and with a catalog with so many iconic tracks, they still chose Heartbeat City to wrap their set. It also has a place on the aforementioned Greatest Hits album,., The stories of the Ghost In You by the Psychedelic Furs, Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley, The Killing Moon by Echo and the Bunnymen, Prince the Beautiful Ones from Purple Rain, No Surrender by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band from Born in the USA, Queen I want to Break Free, Two Tribes by Frankie Goes To Hollywood the second hit after their Smash hit Relax, who were essentially a one hit wonder in america, and Scorpions wit Still Loving You that caused a baby boom.
