90% Sri Lanka Tire Market Controlled by This Indian Company
id you know that the Sri Lankan tyre market is largely dominated by an Indian company, with nearly 90% of tyres sold in the country based on Indian technology? Every year, Sri Lanka sells around 3.5 million tyres, and out of these, an impressive 3.15 million tyres are sold by CEAT, an Indian tyre manufacturing giant. Despite the presence of American, European, Japanese, and Chinese tyre brands, CEAT has established unmatched dominance in Sri Lanka.
The turning point came in 1992, when CEAT strategically entered Sri Lanka by setting up the country’s first modern tyre manufacturing facility through a joint venture with local manufacturer Kelani Tyres. While Western tyre companies relied heavily on imports and avoided local production due to the small market size, CEAT leveraged local manufacturing, competitive pricing, and strong distribution networks to capture market share.
This move pushed out imported tyre brands and made CEAT the most trusted tyre brand for cars, two-wheelers, and commercial vehicles in Sri Lanka. Even global giant Michelin exited Sri Lanka in 2024, selling its business to CEAT after failing to compete.
Sri Lanka is also a strategic hub for CEAT due to its natural rubber exports, which support cost-efficient tyre production. Today, CEAT Sri Lanka exports tyres to multiple countries, including Pakistan, showcasing the global reach of Indian manufacturing excellence.
This success story highlights how Indian brands can outperform global competitors through smart strategy, localization, and long-term vision.
