Russia often calls itself India’s close friend, but the actual India–Russia trade balance tells a very different story. Today, Russia exports nearly USD 65 billion worth of goods to India annually, while importing only around USD 5 billion from India, creating a massive trade deficit of nearly USD 60 billion.
Russia’s pharmaceutical import market alone is worth USD 10 billion, yet India’s share remains limited to just USD 546 million, despite India being one of the world’s largest generic drug manufacturers. Beyond pharmaceuticals, Russia imports nearly USD 60 billion annually in sectors such as agriculture, chemicals, plastics, textiles, leather, automobiles, electronics, and engineering goods, but Indian products still have restricted access to the Russian market.
After the Russia–Ukraine war, several European automobile companies exited Russia, creating strong demand for engine parts, spare components, diesel engines, and locomotive equipment—products already manufactured in India at global quality standards. Despite this, Russia sources nearly USD 2 billion worth of locomotive components from other countries.
To bridge this gap, India’s Commerce Ministry identified 300 export-ready products, where Russia currently spends USD 37 billion importing from other nations, while importing only USD 1.7 billion from India. This highlights India’s untapped export potential, even though India’s market share in Russia remains just 2.3%.
Logistics delays, currency settlement issues, sanctions risk, and China’s geographical advantage continue to limit India–Russia trade growth, despite strong strategic ties.
