India’s influence in the South African automotive market is rapidly growing, with a recent Lightstone report revealing that nearly 50 % of cars sold in South Africa in 2025 have direct or indirect connections to India. This surge reflects a significant shift in global automotive trade patterns, where “Made in India” vehicles and components are increasingly dominating export demand in Africa.
According to the report, Indian automakers such as Mahindra and Tata have become key players, with Mahindra’s pickup series gaining notable traction among South African buyers. Additionally, a large proportion of Japanese-branded vehicles sold locally are actually manufactured in India and imported, underscoring India’s role as a global manufacturing hub for major automotive brands.
Data shows that 84 % of Japanese light vehicles sold in South Africa in 2024 were sourced from India, while Chinese imports accounted for only about 11 % of total sales — debunking the perception that is the dominant external supplier in the market.

When excluding pickups and light commercial vehicles, Indian-linked cars accounted for almost half of all passenger vehicle sales in the first half of 2025, highlighting robust consumer demand for competitively priced Indian products.
Industry analysts attribute this growth to cost efficiencies, competitive pricing, and India’s expanding manufacturing capacity, which not only benefits South African consumers with more affordable options but also poses challenges for local production and manufacturing jobs.
This trend exemplifies India’s emergence as a major global automotive export hub, strengthening trade ties with South Africa and solidifying India’s position in the global automotive ecosystem.
