We began our trip here after a very tough drive from Puerto Princesa. We had no idea the roads would be so winding, and just one hour into this six-hour journey, I (Jason) started to feel very unwell. After we checked into our accommodation at OUTPOST HOSTEL, we pretty much just went straight to sleep, as the long drive had drained the life out of us.

On the first morning, still not feeling 100%, we headed into town. The fare for the trike ride was a flat rate of ₱100. We explored the town for a little while and noticed just how much construction was underway. Every building that wasn’t open was being renovated, and the streets had been torn up by diggers.

We wandered around for a couple of hours, saying hello to the friendly locals and stopping off at El Nido Bakery, which seemed to be very popular. While deciding what sweet treats to try, a young boy told us to avoid one of the cakes, as he had eaten it before and said it was (in his words) “very bad.” We think it was because the cake looked really appealing, with bright colors, but when he tasted it, he realized it wasn't fruity but rather just food coloring with unusual flavors. From that moment on, he vowed never to let anyone else make the same mistake.

We were then advised to try one of the donuts, filled with one of the Philippines' favorite ingredients—yes, you guessed it, Ube.

Ube (for those of you who don’t know) is a type of purple yam commonly used in Filipino cuisine. It's known for its striking, vibrant purple color and naturally sweet, nutty flavor. Ube is often used in desserts, such as ube halaya (a sweet, creamy jam-like treat), ube ice cream, and ube cake. Beyond its unique taste, it's prized for its versatility in both traditional and modern dishes. It can be boiled, mashed, or pureed, and its sweet, earthy flavor lends itself to a variety of sweet and savory applications. Ube has recently gained popularity worldwide, especially in fusion desserts and baked goods.

Our total came to only ₱25 ($0.40), which was an amazing deal for some fresh Filipino treats.
