STORYLINE:
Thousands of worshippers gathered early Saturday in Lima for the second procession of the Lord of Miracles, one of several held throughout October in the Peruvian capital in honor of the country’s most revered Catholic image.

Interim President José Jerí appeared on the balcony of the Government Palace to pay tribute alongside members of his Cabinet.

Dressed in purple, the traditional color of the devotion, Jerí later joined the procession, walking from the palace to the Plaza de Armas and carrying the sacred image for several meters.

Government officials placed flowers and candles in the square, the same site where a Gen Z protests demanding Jerí’s resignation turned violent days earlier.

The unrest left one demonstrator dead, authorities said.

Hundreds of officers were also injured in the clashes.

The Lord of Miracles procession winds through central Lima each October, receiving tributes from the president, the city’s mayor, and the Archbishop of Lima.

Hundreds of colorful carpets made of flower petals and dyed sawdust covered the Plaza de Armas in preparation for the event.

The devotion dates back to the 17th century, when an enslaved man from Angola painted an image of Christ crucified on an adobe wall.
