Run along the River Weaver from Frodsham to Dutton Lock | Weaver Way (9.75 miles)

Today we’re having a run down the river Weaver which is lovely, all off road and out in the Cheshire Countryside. Starting from Mill Lane off Sutton Causeway at the edge of Frodsham near the swing bridge we join the river where it becomes the Weaver Navigation near the end of its journey onto the Manchester Ship canal and the River Mersey.

We take advantage of the fact that the river Weaver has a path on both sides and head up river to Dutton Lock and cross over, the return leg is the final stretch of the Weaver Way to Frodsham.

The Weaver Way

The weaver way runs from Frodsham passing Acton Bridge, Northwich and through to Winsford.

The history of the route comes from its use in the transport of salt from Winsford down to Frodsham and out to the Manchester Ship Canal and the Mersey. As the salt was also transported from Winsford by canal inland the Weaver Way also extends out in the other direction from Winsford onto the Middlewich Spur of the Shropshire Union Canal and out on the Shropshire Union canal to Audlem.

It’s worth noting that the Sandstone trail also starts in Frodsham

So if you’d like a huge circular route you could do both the Sandstone Trail and the Weaver way, just short of Audlem follow the South Cheshire Way through Aston and on to Whitchurch to make an enormous circular route.

The Route

Very simple route, from Mill lane turn left onto Sutton Causeway and cross the Swing Bridge then turn right onto the path alongside the Weaver Navigation and onto the river Weaver.

Follow the path which takes you past Pickering’s Cut / Pickering’s Wharf and under Dutton Viaduct which carries the mainline to Liverpool and then up to Dutton Lock where you can cross the lock and turn right back down the other side of the river on the Weaver Way.

After the viaduct, opposite Pickering’s Cut the path turns left away from the river. Follow it and then turn right on the path through the caravan park and back onto the river.

Further down the path is a little less obvious where it opens up onto the fields near Catton Hall, just stay close to the river and you won’t go far wrong.

Eventually you reach Frodsham Cut where the river branches follow the cut which comes out on Sutton Causeway close to the start at Frodsham Bridge. Turn right over the bridge and then left into Mill Lane, the route is just short of 10 miles.
