Let’s discuss the FIFA Laws of the Game about taking the ball from the goalkeeper.
Law 12 explains Fouls and Misconduct.
The goalkeeper is considered in possession of the ball when they have it under control with their hands or arms.
This includes holding the ball, bouncing it, or tossing it into the air.
Opponents must not challenge or make physical contact with the goalkeeper when they are in possession.
Any attempt to kick, push, or obstruct the goalkeeper is a foul.
If the goalkeeper drops the ball intentionally or accidentally, opponents can challenge for the ball.
If a goalkeeper is impeded improperly, an indirect free kick is awarded to the goalkeeper's team.
This includes when an opponent tries to take the ball while the goalkeeper is attempting to release it.
Now, let’s discuss the 6-Second Rule.
Goalkeepers must release the ball within six seconds of gaining control.
Failure to do so results in an indirect free kick to the opposing team from the spot where the violation occurred.
However, many referees are very lenient with this rule.
Goalkeepers cannot handle the ball if it is deliberately kicked to them by a teammate.
Violation of this rule results in an indirect free kick from the spot of the infraction.
Similarly, goalkeepers cannot handle the ball directly from a throw-in by a teammate.
