Let’s cover how to pump a ball.
There are hand pumps, electric pumps, or bicycle pumps that can be used
As long as you have the appropriate needle.
Also, you should generally use some type of lubricant on the opening and/or needle.
Spit is usually the preferred choice of most players and coaches.
Next, find the valve.
It is usually a black circle with a hole in the middle.
Gently insert the needle straight into the valve.
Avoid forcing it to prevent damage to the valve.
Then, begin pumping air into the ball.
Monitor the ball’s inflation level periodically to avoid over-inflation.
Many soccer balls have the recommended pressure printed near the valve.
It’s usually measured in PSI (pounds per square inch).
Technically, the PSI of a size 5 soccer ball needs to be between 8.5 and 15
But that is such a wide range so aim for 12 if measuring.
A pressure gauge ensures the ball is inflated to the correct pressure.
However, I have only ever seen a coach or player use a pressure gauge once.
Sadly, over-inflating can cause the ball to become hard and difficult to control.
Under-inflating can affect the ball’s bounce and flight.
A properly inflated ball should feel firm but not rock hard. It should have a slight give when pressed.
Then, drop the ball from a height of about shoulder level.
It should bounce up to approximately waist height.
Also, the ball should maintain a round shape without bulges or irregularities.
If the ball deflates quickly, there is likely a puncture or a damaged valve.
Repair kits are usually of little use, so consider getting a new ball if this happens.
