The mythos behind the song: I chose to go with the tale that is most commonly told of Medusa's origins (Ovid's Metamorphoses 4.5750-803), where the Roman God Neptune (the Greek equivalent being Poseidon) assaults Medusa, a priestess of Minerva (the Greek equivalent being Athena) within the goddess's temple. Instead of punishing Neptune for the transgression, Minerva turned her anger towards Medusa, and cursed the young woman, thus transforming her from a beautiful mortal into a monstrous creature that none may look upon.
