STORYLINE:
Al-Qaida deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri had frequented the religious school destroyed in a Pakistani air strike, but wasn't there during the attack, a security official said on Tuesday.
Earlier in the day the Pakistani military said it used intelligence provided by US-led forces in Afghanistan for the raid on the madrassa in the remote tribal Bajur district that it says was being used as an al-Qaida training camp.
The missile strike, which took place in the early hours of Monday morning, left 80 people dead and has sparked outrage among local people and Islamic officials who say the victims were students and teachers.
At the scene of the bombed out madrassa, eyewitness Muhammad Sarwar described the attack.
"I got up at five 'o clock in the morning to offer my prayers. When I came out aircraft were flying all around, then suddenly the aircraft started bombing. They were flying very high and when they started bombing the madrassa there was dust everywhere," he said.
Pro-Taliban tribesmen in the region, which borders Afghanistan, have threatened to send suicide bombers to attack Pakistani forces and execute people found spying for the Americans.
Anti-government and anti-American protests have taken place in a number of cities across Pakistan.
In the Pakistani capital Islamabad protestors chanted, "he (General Pervez Musharraf) is a traitor who is a friend of America" and burnt the U.S. flag.
"Everyone is saying this blood was not shed by the Pakistani Army, this blood is shed by Americans," one protester told an assembled crowd.
The Pakistani military has denied that any U.S. aircraft were used in the attack, saying that its own helicopters fired five missiles into the madrassa.
Monday's attack could now jeopardise efforts by Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf to persuade the deeply conservative tribespeople in the north of the country to back his government against pro-Taliban and al-Qaida fighters.
