STORYLINE:
Protesters in Pakistan, angry at a military strike on a purported al-Qaida linked training facility, took to the streets on Monday chanting anti-U.S. slogans and burning the American flag.
Pakistan's military said troops backed by missile-firing helicopters on Monday launched their deadliest-ever attack against suspected militants, killing 80 people and destroying what they claimed was an al-Qaida-linked training site.
Mushtaq Ahmed, General Secretary of the political alliance Muthida Majlis Amal said that the protest had been organised in order to condemn the strike.
"They killed 80 teenagers who were students, students of the Quran and these are innocent people. This is a very cruel joint-activity (between the U.S. and the Musharraf government) so to condemn this cruel activity we staged this protest."
The raid on a religious school - known as a madrassa - in Pakistan's remote northwest near the Afghan border has sparked outrage among many who say the victims were innocent students and teachers.
"These are our religious and holy places and we won't allow anyone to destroy these holy places, said Abdul Rasheed at a rally attended by about 150 people in Karachi.
If correct, the death toll in the northern tribal-dominated Bajur district would be the highest ever for any single military operation targeting purported Islamic militants in Pakistan
Helicopter gunships fired four to five missiles into the madrassa in Chingai, a village near the Bajur district's main town of Khar, where up to 80 people were believed to have been early on Monday, said an army spokesman.
The blasts tore apart the building and all inside, spraying body parts, blood and debris across a wide area.
Pakistan military officials said the madrassa was used as a front to train militants and the attack was launched after those in charge of the building refused warnings by the military in recent weeks to close it down.
