City of Norfolk and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Norfolk District commences a coastal storm damage reduction project that's unprecedented in the 333-year history of the city. The initial beach nourishment will expand the beach 60-feet in the Willoughby Spit and East Ocean View areas. The project is 65 percent federally funded, 35 percent non-federally funded. Known as the Willoughby Spit and Vicinity project, it includes shoreline and adjacent land area extending along the Chesapeake Bay from the eastern limit at the jetties of Little Creek Inlet to the western limit at the tip of Willoughby Spit. Federal funding will dramatically reduce Norfolk's cost. The current completion date is May 2016. Construction is scheduled to start in Nov 2015 to avoid impacts to sea turtles. The estimated construction duration is six months.
Norfolk, Virginia is currently at or near tops on the list of east coast sea level rise in the USA.
