Hello! Today we will learn the past tense expression '-았/었-' in the formal polite style (합쇼체).
Watch this flashcard-style video repeatedly to listen, see, and practice until you get used to it.
1. What is -았/었습니다?
It’s formal polite past tense ending in Korean.
You attach it to the verb/adjective stem to show that the action/state happened in the past.
2. How it’s chosen (depending on the stem vowel)
Stem ends in ㅏ or ㅗ → use -았습니다
Other vowels (ㅓ, ㅜ, ㅡ, ㅣ, etc.) → use -었습니다
하다 verbs → contracted to -했습니다
3. FORMAL & INFORMAL & CASUAL
1. 았/었 = past tense marker
2. Combine with different endings depending on speech style:
Formal polite : -았습니다 / -었습니다 (갔습니다, 먹었습니다)
Informal polite : -았어요 / -었어요 (갔어요, 먹었어요)
Informal, Casual : -았어 / - 었어 (갔어, 먹었어)
Plain: -았다 / -었다 (갔다, 먹었다)
