In Transactional Analysis, Eric Berne present three parts of our personality: Parent, Adult and Child. This is superficially similar to Freud's Id, Ego and Superego.
The Parent side of our behavior can be either nurturing or critical. When people criticize you, find fault, tell you what you should do or baby you and try to protect you from the world (enabling) they are coming from their Parent.
The Child also has 2 parts. The Adapted child which is the more selfish, demanding and temper-tantrum side and the Free Child which is fun and spontaneous. When people have a meltdown if you tell them something they don't like or act irresponsibly, they are coming from their Child.
There is only one side to the Adult. This is the objective, rational, reasonable, logical and realistic side of ourselves. There are times when we need our Child and Parent side, especially when we are by ourselves, but try to keep to the Adult part when interacting with others.
