How to Paint an Outboard Motor Cowling with Pettit EZ Poxy Aerosol
What You'll Need:
400 grit sandpaper
Air hose or compressed air
Tack cloth
Pettit EZ Poxy Aerosol (1-2 cans depending on cowling size)
Clean gloves
Decals (optional)
Masking tape (optional for masking off areas)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Prep the Surface
Remove the cowling from the outboard motor.
Wash the cowling with soap and water to remove dirt and grease.
Let it dry completely.
2. Sand the Cowling
Using 400 grit sandpaper, sand the entire cowling evenly.
Focus on dulling the surface to promote adhesion, not removing layers.
3. Blow Off Residue
Use an air hose or compressed air to thoroughly blow off sanding dust and particles.
4. Wipe Down with Tack Cloth
Use a tack cloth to remove any remaining dust and debris.
Avoid touching the clean surface with bare hands to prevent oils from transferring.
Time to Paint!
5. Shake the EZ Poxy Aerosol
Shake the can vigorously for 2 minutes before spraying.
Shake periodically while spraying for even distribution.
6. Apply the First Coat
Hold the can 10-12 inches from the surface.
Apply a light, even coat in a sweeping motion.
Let it dry per label instructions.
7. Apply Additional Coats
Apply 2–3 light coats, allowing proper drying time between each.
Avoid heavy coats to prevent runs and drips.

8. Apply Decals
Once the final coat is fully cured (usually 24+ hours), apply your decals.
Use a squeegee or credit card to remove bubbles if needed.
9. Reassemble the Cowling
Carefully reattach the cowling to your motor.
Step back and admire your refreshed outboard!
💡 Pro Tips:
Ideal conditions are low humidity, 60-85°F, and in a dust-free area.
