Teaching with Purpose - Social Justice, Refugee Access, and Reimagining EAP
In this interview, Aleks Palanac discusses her journey from grassroots ESOL teaching to becoming a leading advocate for trauma-informed and socially just EAP. Drawing on personal and professional experience, she challenges the assumption that EAP is solely for the privileged, instead creating inclusive pathways for students from refugee backgrounds. She reflects on co-founding BALEAP’s Social Justice SIG and on building the RefugEAP programme and Network, offering free trauma-informed EAP to displaced learners. Palanac shares how CPD rooted in positive psychology, critical pedagogy, and personal values has shaped her practice. Emphasising praxis over theory, she encourages educators to act ethically, even when it’s uncomfortable, to make EAP more responsive, human, and transformative.
About Aleks Palanac: Aleks Palanac is Head of Sanctuary at the University of Leicester’s Sanctuary Seekers’ Unit, where she leads initiatives supporting refugee-background students in accessing higher education through trauma-informed English for Academic Purposes provision. She co-founded the RefugEAP Network and BALEAP’s EAP for Social Justice Special Interest Group, both of which promote inclusive, socially responsive EAP practices. Her work has been instrumental in integrating social justice into EAP pedagogy and expanding access for marginalized learners.
