In this interview, Dr. Ian Bruce shares insights from his long career in EAP, reflecting on the complexity of academic literacy, the role of discourse and genre, and the shifting identity of EAP professionals. He highlights the growing emphasis on embedded EAP and warns against the pressures of commodification and under-recognition in some institutional contexts. Advocating for mentoring, joint scholarship, and reflective practice, Bruce underscores the value of community, particularly through BALEAP or other similar organisations, in supporting professional growth. He encourages practitioners to develop specialisms and engage in research, arguing that this scholarly grounding is what gives EAP its credibility, resilience, and long-term purpose.
About Ian Bruce: Ian Bruce is a senior lecturer (retired) and research associate in Applied Linguistics at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. His research focuses on genre-based approaches to academic writing instruction and the development of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) curricula that align with disciplinary expectations. Bruce is the author of Academic Writing and Genre: A Systematic Analysis and co-author, with Alex Ding, of The English for Academic Purposes Practitioner: Operating on the Edge of Academia, both of which have contributed significantly to advancing EAP pedagogy, curriculum design, and the professional identity of EAP practitioners. His work bridges linguistic theory and classroom practice, offering frameworks that support both critical awareness and practical application in academic writing instruction.
