According to the publication "Ngaa Waiata - Tukua ki te Iwi", by Waikato-Tainui, this song was composed by Maarama Motutara and Tata Te Aira Muru, for the grandmother of Maarama who passed away in 1928. Other oral accounts talk of Te Puea Herangi singing this waiata to comfort the young men of Waikato that were imprisoned for refusing to fight in World War Two.
This is an educational resource to help future students of Te Whare Haka o Te Maurea Whiritoi learn the words, translations, actions and guitar chords for our standard repertoire of waiata, poi and haka. Join our future generations of Te Maurea Whiritoi kaihaka in learning this item.

NGĀ KUPU
I ngā mōkai kiri e
He aha kei taku uma e tuki nei ka mamae
Hī auē auē
He aroha pea ki te tau
Ka momotu ki tawhiti e
Auē
Auē te aroha, auē te mamae
Tōtōia kumekumea
E pēhi kino iho nei
I ngā mōkai kiri e
E oho, maranga
E oho rangatahi, maranga mai
Hāpainga tō iwi e
Hī auē auē
Kia kaha, kia toa, kia manawanui
Ake ake kia kaha e
Auē
Auē te aroha, auē te mamae
Tōtōia kumekumea
E pēhi kino iho nei
I ngā mōkai kiri e
Hī auē hī!
TRANSLATION
What is it that painfully beats against my chest?
Could it be that of love for my sweetheart
Who has gone afar
Alas
Alas, the unceasing pain and grief
Haul, Pull
That oppresses me
I am bereft
Awaken, arise
Rise up oh youth
To assist your people
Be strong, be brave, be passionate
Forever more
Alas
Alas, the unceasing pain and grief
Haul, Pull
That oppresses me
I am bereft
Hī auē hī!
