This waiata (song) originates from the early efforts of Princess Te Puea Hērangi at Tūrangawaewae Marae. The line, "Tīmatangia Te Puea e, i Te Pou o Mangataawhiri," references the location of Mangataawhiri and its historical significance. This site is where King Tāwhiao issued his warning to the colonial forces: crossing the Mangataawhiri Stream would be considered an act of war, marking a crucial boundary in the ensuing conflicts.
The song is strongly associated with the formation of the nation's oldest kapa haka group, which Te Puea established. The group's primary purpose was to travel the country to fundraise for the construction of Tūrangawaewae Marae. It is therefore understood that the song was composed by the early members of this group, including Charlotte Tuupaea and the other esteemed elders (both men and women) who comprised its founding membership. The lyrics of the song also reflect various inter-tribal connections, notably referencing Tūrongo and Mahinaarangi (linking to the East Coast), and acknowledging the relationship with Northland and the Treaty of Waitangi.

NGĀ KUPU
Tīmatangia Te Puea e, i Te Pou o Mangataawhiri
Ki te waha i ngā iwi, ki te waha i te tikanga
Me te rangimāria e
Nā Tūrongo i hanga e, te ara Pare Waikato
E tomo atu ai ki Te Tairāwhiti
Ko Māhinaarangi e
Mahi ake nei au e, i tōku nei whare e
Ngā pou o roto he Māhoe, he Patatē
He Hīnau noa e
Wai hōpuapua e, e mimiti ai koe e
Ko te wai a Rona he manawa-ā-whenua
E kore e mimiti e
E huri tō kanohi e, ki te hau tū-ā-raki
Te Tiriti o Waitangi e tū moke mai rā
I waho te moana e
Nō Te Ariki te aroha, horahia nuitia e
Ki runga ki ngā iwi hei kākahu rā
Mō te iti, mō te rahi e
Kāti nei e te iwi e, tō kumekume roa e
Kei mau tātou i te rā whakawā
I te rā whakawā o Te Atua
Ko Paneiraira e! Ko Paneiraira hoki
Ko Paneiraira he tangata rawerawe
Nō roto o Waikato e
TRANSLATION
‘Twas Te Puea who initiated Te Pou o Mangataawhiri
To carry and unite the people, to uphold traditional customs
To bring peace to one and all
‘Twas Tūrongo who paved the way from Waikato
To the East Coast
To Māhinaarangi
‘Tis I who built my house
The posts within made of Māhoe Patatē
And Hīnau
Pools of water will evaporate
But the spring of Rona comes from deep in the earth
And will never run dry
Turn your gaze to the winds of the north
Standing alone is the Treaty of Waitangi
Yonder, in the ocean
‘Twas the love of God, spread far and wide
Across the land, to clothe
The multitudes
Cease now oh people, the deferment
Judgement day is near
For God's judgement day is near
‘Tis Paneiraira! ‘Tis Paneiraira!
The Great Paneiraira
Of Waikato
