Global National: June 24, 2020 | Parts of Canada begin to ease COVID-19 lockdown measures

Описание: More regions in Canada are easing up on their COVID-19 public health restrictions and are allowing more freedom to people to get together. The four Atlantic provinces have agreed to an “travel bubble” which will allow for freer movement between the provinces without having to self-isolate for two weeks beginning July 3.

But this comes as there’s a surge in COVID-19 cases for people under the age of 20. As Eric Sorensen reports, the young might be less susceptible to getting sick, but they can spread the virus to those who are at greater risk.

South of the border in Washington State, there’s been a spike of new cases and wearing masks in public is now mandatory. In fact, failure to wear one is a crime. More than 4,000 people are in the hospital with COVID-19 and one hospital near Seattle has run out of beds. The situation is worse in some other states. As Jennifer Johnson reports, the rate of infection is surging back to where it was back in April.

The European Union is expected to decide this week how to relax travel restrictions this summer to allow some non-European visitors. Some countries might not make the safe list, however. Brazil, Russia and the United States could remain banned. Redmond Shannon has more.

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne has re-paid two mortgages to the state owned Bank of China after Opposition MPs criticized him for it. Champagne says the mortgages never influenced his work, but as David Akin reports, China is weaponizing investment and trade.

Charges against a First Nations chief in Alberta, accused of assaulting an RCMP officer, have been withdrawn. Dash cam video showed what happened in a parking lot in Fort McMurray, Alberta in March. After accusing a Mountie of harassing him a second officer runs at chief Allan Adam, grabs him by the neck and shoulders, tackles him and punches him in the head. The RCMP at first said the officers actions were reasonable, but today as Heather Yourex-West explains, that changed.

Finally tonight, wellness checks and how they are handled are under scrutiny in this country. Abigail Bimman takes a look at what they are and whether who responds needs to change.
