We begin tonight with the mounting pressure for Canada to do more to get two Canadians detained in China released. Michael Kovrig's wife says the Justice Minister has the power to release Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou. Dropping the charges against her could result in the release of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor. Ottawa Bureau Chief Mercedes Stephenson has more including what the legal experts are saying.
Cases of COVID-19 are on the rise among young people where the restrictions are being lifted. Now Ontario is reporting its first death of a child from COVID-19.
There are reports the European Union could move to block Americans from entering member countries because of the U.S. failure to control the spread of COVID-19. Americans would join Russian and Brazilians on a list of those not welcome to Europe. As well, a new surge in cases stateside has American doctors worried. Jennifer Johnson reports.
The Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) has been extended until the end of August. Manitoba's government wants people to get off the CERB and get back to work. Some critics say the $2,000 a month is a dis-incentive for people to go back to their jobs. Premier Brian Pallister is offering to temporarily top up their pay in a Manitoba Job Restart Program. Brittany Greenslade has more.
Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has been talking about ditching the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) but experts say it is a long road ahead before this could become a reality. Tom Vernon reports.
The Trump administration is considering re-imposing tariffs on Canadian aluminum after accusations that Canada is destroying what is left of the U.S. aluminum industry. The American Primary Aluminum Association claims there's been a surge of imports in Canadian aluminum, vital for producing planes, cars and other products. A year ago the Canadian government fought to remove levees on our Canadian metals, but as Mike Le Couteur reports, Canada has since lost some leverage on that front.
And finally tonight, Mike Armstrong reports on how Canadian boxer Kim Clavel traded in her boxing gloves for medical gloves to help those most vulnerable to the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic.
