Court orders police to probe man's disappearance

Mwanyota has been missing since February 23, 2021, after security agents abducted him from his home in Likoni, Mombasa.

During the abduction, Mwanyota’s wife said security agents confiscated their phones. They have been off ever since.

The judge said the police report must include call data records and phone coordinates and ascertain at what time and point the phones were switched off. The police will report back on September 23, 2022.

Mwanyota’s case is among those included in Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests filed with the US government. MUHURI, the NYU School of Law’s Global Justice Clinic and the Center for Constitutional Rights filed the requests to obtain transparency about the United States government’s role in training, funding and supporting Kenyan police and paramilitary forces involved in serious human rights abuses against Muslim communities.
