Santa Barbara sits along the southern coast of California between the Pacific Ocean and the steep Santa Ynez Mountains. Unlike most of the California coastline, the shoreline here faces south due to the east-west orientation of the Transverse Ranges. Tectonic forces uplifted these mountains while coastal erosion shaped beaches and marine terraces along the shoreline. The narrow coastal plain concentrates development between steep mountains and the ocean, while canyons and seasonal creeks influence drainage and land use across the region.
