Preikestolen, also known as Pulpit Rock, is a massive cliff rising about 604 meters (1,982 feet) above Lysefjord in southwestern Norway. The formation was created during the last Ice Age, when glaciers carved deep fjords into the Scandinavian landscape. As the ice retreated, freeze-thaw weathering and erosion helped shape the nearly flat summit and sheer vertical drop. Today, Preikestolen stands as one of Norway’s most recognizable natural landforms, illustrating how glacial erosion and bedrock fractures sculpt dramatic fjord landscapes.
