Dealing with Patellar tendonitis, commonly known as Jumper's Knee? Don't worry, APEX Performance Wellness & Rehab has your back! Our stellar sports physical therapy team is ready to help you overcome this frustrating condition and get you back to your peak performance.
We understand the challenges and limitations that come with Patellar tendonitis … We often work with youth athletes from basketball, to volleyball to running that are experiencing this issue. Here are 4 exercises we like to help jumper’s knee or patellar tendonitis. REMEMBER - while rest can make things go away, it ultimately will make matters worse because the tendon needs to be TRAINED to respond. These exercises do just that:
Exercise 1: Knee Extension Isometric
Sit down and kick a ball into the wall, maintaining a bend in your knee between 90 to 60 degrees. Hold this position for 10 to 30 seconds, gradually increasing the intensity from a gentle start to pushing your limits at maximum strength.
Exercise 2: Low Prowler Sled Push
This exercise focuses on engaging your quads as well as other leg muscles. It will also be straining the tendon in the right position. Push the prowler sled, challenging your lower body and targeting the affected tendon. The sled also provides a conditioning element that can help you in your sport and keep the Jumper’s knee at bay come 2nd half or 4th quarter.
Exercise 3: Reverse Sled Walks
Walking backward under load (with the sled) will help stimulate and strengthen the quads and patellar tendon. This exercise provides a unique challenge to improve strength and stability in your knee.
Exercise 4: Spanish Tempo Squat
This spicy exercise requires a slow and controlled descent, followed by a hold, and then a gradual rise. Keep the emphasis proper form and technique throughout. EMBRACE THE BURN in the QUADS!
