On May 26th, the fifth day of our Galápagos journey, we began the morning at Post Office Bay, a site known for its unique tradition. Following the custom, our group collected several postcards left by previous visitors and planned to mail them upon our return home.
After another wet landing and a steep climb to the top of a rocky outcrop, we enjoyed a spectacular view of the island and several old volcanic cones, some of which are in the waters around Floreana. We also observed several tortoises swimming in the shallow water from our high vantage point.
This scientific expedition is grounded in a biblical worldview. After nearly a year of investigation and study, the students are now conducting their own inquiries. Rather than relying on what others have written, they engage in firsthand observational research with a clear purpose: to personally look for God's fingerprint in the Galápagos Islands.
In the afternoon, we landed at Cormorant Point, which features two dramatically different beaches just a short walk apart. We landed on Green Sand Beach. It has unusual golden-greenish sand rich in olivine crystals, a volcanic mineral that gives the sand its striking color. It was here that Mrs. “D's” missing expedition, “Cork Hat,” was needed because of the bugs.
Just over a slight rise lies Flour Beach. It is composed of fine white coral sand, which gives the beach its name because of its soft, powdery texture. This beach is an important nesting site for Pacific green sea turtles. Along the path, several members of the science team discussed the animals they had seen so far on our Galápagos Islands trip.
At the heart of Cormorant Point is a brackish saltwater lagoon where Greater Flamingos often gather and feed in the shallow water, sifting for shrimp and other small creatures. The lagoon is among the best places in the Galápagos to observe them. The science team tested the lagoon's water for pH.
Because the morning was full and to avoid imposing on your time, we decided to split the day into two parts. This video is the “Full Version,” lasting 34 minutes and 25 seconds. Part 1 is 15 minutes and 49 seconds, and Part 2 is 19 minutes and 42 seconds. These shortened videos will be posted soon and are identical to the "Full Version," just split into two parts.
