This is the sixth video in our Galápagos Islands series. Today, we begin on Santa Fé Island, a small, relatively flat island, and after lunch travel to South Plaza Island. Santa Fé also has the greatest variety of endemic wildlife species in the Galápagos.
Geologically, these islands are distinct from most other Galápagos islands because their formation resulted not from volcanic activity but from lava upwelling from the ocean floor. Giant prickly pear cactus forests and rugged cliffs enhance the islands' picturesque landscapes and beautiful turquoise waters.
Using the scientific method learned in class, the science team applies critical thinking skills and a framework of assumptions, concepts, and values through a Biblical worldview.
While waiting for lunch, the Galaxy leaves Santa Fé Island and heads toward the Plazas, just east of Santa Cruz Island. The science team takes a few minutes to rest and soak up the sun on the Galaxy's upper deck. We are joined by a group of female Frigatebirds, who catch a free ride on the Galaxy's top deck.
On South Plaza Island, we walk among the land iguanas, being careful not to step on any of them along the way! We also examine the cacti, and Jaime explains that they provide both food and water for the iguanas.
Be sure to watch for a large bull male sea lion challenging our landing and chasing off the other panga, which heads back to the Galaxy. The dominant male protects his harem by patrolling the area and chasing off would-be challengers, including tour guides!
Inland, we observe the shallow root system of these large Opuntia cacti. These are truly large cacti, more like trees. As the camera pans up, you can see the spent flowers that will eventually become food for the iguanas.
The trail continues through an Opuntia cactus forest, past the colorful Galápagos carpet weed. Gradually, it ascends to a cliff plateau that offers the science team a panoramic view.
