Many pediatricians will tell mothers to never underestimate the power of burping. Because it can help to reduce complications like colic or a build up of gas, which causes your baby discomfort. Sometimes parents do over-do it and spend more time burping than they need to. As a good rule of thumb, sometimes the number of times you burp is more important than the length of time you spend burping. It's always good to use natural pauses. Like, if your bottle feeding, stop after every two to three ounces once your baby kind of naturally starts looking around or breaking off for a second. If you're breast-feeding, do it before you switch your baby to the other side and then after the feeding is over.
The reason why the frequency may do more for your baby is because the motion of setting your baby up and burping them or putting them on your lap to burp them helps them to work out the bubbles and help them to burp more easily. You usually don't have to burp them for more than a minute. If they don't burp, then they may not need to. Usually babies start burping on their own sometime between six to eight months. So, once you notice your baby burping before you burp them, it's okay to stop. If you have more questions about it, don't hesitate to ask your pediatrician.
