Besides the gardens, this Florida State Park has great views of the Matanzas River and a beach walk along coquina stone. Located between St. Augustine and Daytona Beach this spot is worth a stop.
I was hiking in a group this trip so I probably didn't find as much wildlife as I could have, but you can't overvalue good company.
The gardens did have a few birds, as did the beach. Also found on our beach walk were dolphins, mollusks, and anemone. Surprisingly no crabs though.
It was a windy winter day. Not sure if that played a factor in my search for animals. The roses were the highlight of the garden for me. The ponds looked overrun with algae. This could explain the lack of turtles and such, if it wasn't the weather. I couldn't say.
All that aside, under the circumstances of this particular visit, I'd say this park exceeded most of my expectations.
There's a nature trail north of the garden walk we checked out. The rock hopping beach walk went on further than we did. So you could totally make a day out of this place.
Might even see a rocket launch. One went up while we were n the beach but it was too cloudy.
