In this episode, I focus on improving the lighting and creating particle effects for our game "Nom Zom Defense: Click. Aim. Survive." using the Godot Engine. We kick off by addressing lighting inconsistencies after transitioning to the forward-plus rendering method. I explore how lighting behaves in different scenarios, testing and tweaking parameters to achieve a more polished and dynamic environment. This includes enhancing the brightness, adjusting sky, ground, and ambient lighting, and saving new settings for reuse.
Later in the stream, we dive into adding firing effect animations for the turrets. I experiment with particle systems to simulate muzzle flashes, exploring different settings for velocity, spread, emission shapes, and materials to build visually engaging effects. I discuss potential methods to align animations with turret mechanics while troubleshooting some unexpected behavior in Godot, including crashes and orientation challenges.
Throughout the session, I share my thought process, tackle problems step-by-step, and reflect on design decisions to create more immersive gameplay. Despite some technical hurdles, it’s a productive session refining both visual elements and game functionality.
