‘Going further than most other people go’: following in the footsteps of Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762)
Life certainly became an adventure for Lady Mary after her near-deadly brush with smallpox. In her aristocratic western social circles, the loss of her looks meant reduced influence at court. The situation wasn’t helped by the fact that one of Mary’s poems had caused a scandal. It seemed a prudent move to accompany her husband, Edward Wortley Montagu, who had just been appointed ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, to his new domain in modern-day Turkey.
Or, in Mary’s words, ‘’twas a sort of dying to her friends and country. But ‘twas travelling; ‘twas going further than most other people go; ‘twas wandering; ‘twas all whimsical and charming; and so she set out with all the pleasures imaginable.’
Travel then was treacherous and slow, and the route to Turkey led through war-torn territory. Mary and Edward left London on 1 August 1716. After a journey by ship and over land, they reached Constantinople in May 1717.
