Women’s spaces then and now: following in the footsteps of Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762)
On her journey to Turkey, Mary visited a Turkish bath, or hammam, in Sophia (today the capital of Bulgaria). It was a revelation.
She was received with friendly curiosity and openness, so different from the London society she knew.
Surrounded by about 200 women, all completely comfortable with being naked around each other, Mary noted with surprise that none of them was disfigured by any pock marks.
Observing these women talking, discussing news, drinking coffee and sherbet for hours, she must have felt jealous and was reminded of men gossiping in London coffee houses.
But coffee houses were places that she as an aristocratic woman with a reputation to protect simply couldn’t visit.
If Mary were alive today, where would she go to find these kinds of female spaces, where wellbeing and conversation mix in relaxed surroundings?
