Hey Guys! My name is Emiliano Escobedo, and I am the Executive Director of the Hass Avocado Board. At the Hass Avocado Board our job is to make avocados America’s most popular food.
Today I am going to show you how to store an avocado in the freezer. A couple of things:
#1 Never freeze a whole avocado – you have to slice it
#2 You have to make sure that the avocado you are freezing is actually ripe and ready to eat
Now, why would you want to store an avocado in the freezer in the first place, since they are so delicious fresh? Well, maybe you bought too many, maybe you couldn’t get to it, maybe you bought a bunch of them and were planning an event but it turns out the event gets canceled and you have all of these precious avocados that are ripe and ready to eat that you don’t want to get rid of. So, what you can do, is you can freeze them!
Here is how you do it:
#1 Wash your ripe avocado
#2 Cut the avocado lengthwise around the pit (More tips on safely cutting an avocado: https://loveonetoday.com/how-to/how-t...)
#3 Cut the fresh avocado in quarters
#4 Peel the avocado quarters (This is very important; you don’t want to freeze your avocados with the skin)
#5 Easily remove the pit by hand
Now that I have my quarters, it depends on how you are going to use your avocado. Usually, we use them in smoothies! I can store them in quarters just as they are, or I can cut them into small pieces. In this case I am going to cut some into small pieces. The reason I do that, is when I throw these in the blender after they are frozen, it is just going to be easier on the blender and is going to make my smoothie making process a lot easier as well.
So, I will take my diced avocados and put them in a plastic bag and then I will remove some of the air that is in the plastic bag before sealing it. After sealing I will then place the bag into the freezer.
Now I did this earlier, so I have an example of what a frozen avocado looks like. As you can see, the avocado quarter is very frozen and would be very difficult to cut into. It is important to remove the pit and skin before the freezing process, because after the avocado is frozen, it becomes very difficult to remove those.
So, then what is the next step? I usually throw the frozen pieces of avocado into a smoothie. If you allow the frozen avocado to thaw naturally, it is not going to be as creamy as a fresh avocado, but it will make the perfect creamy addition to any smoothie.
