Final Fantasy 7 Gold Chocobo Breeding guide: 15 easy steps to breed a Gold Chocobo

Here's how to breed a Gold Chocobo in Final Fantasy 7:

1) To begin, have the Highwind and plenty of Gil. The easiest way to get money is selling a mastered All Materia for 1.4m Gil.

2) Purchase every stable at the Chocobo Farm east of Karm. Collect and equip the second Chocobo Lure Materia while you are here.

3) Visit the Chocobo Sage near Icicle Inn and buy 30-40 Sylikis Greens (for feeding) and 10 Reagan Greens (for catching).

Note: There is also an Enemy Skill Materia here by speaking to the chocobo.

4) Outside Bone Village, steal 3x Carob Nut from Vlakorados. You need this for breeding.

5) On Goblin Island, steal 1x Zeio Nut from a Goblin.

Note: There is also the Goblin Punch Enemy Skill to pick up here, too.

6) Catch 2 Chocobo near Mideel. They must be only accompanied by Spiral enemies. Don't forget to equip the Chocobo Lure Materia!

7) Save before entering Chocobo Farm. Add the two Chocobos to the stables. One must be male, one female. If not, reload your save until they are.

Recommended: Feed 10 Sylkis Greens to one Chocobo. This is to improve its racing stats.

8) Head to Gold Saucer and win four Chocobo races. You can leave them in the stable by the way - you just need to go there yourself.

Racing tip: Race in Manual, and keep holding all four shoulder buttons to regenerate the Chocobo’s stamina.

9) Return to Chocobo Farm and breed the Chocobos to get a Blue or Green Chocobo. The odds are 50/50.

Note: You must fight battles until they can breed again. Play the game as usual and come back, or fight local creatures a handful of times until the Chocobo are rested.

10) Save your game and breed them again. It must be the opposite of the other Chocobo - so if it was male Green, you need female Blue - as you need to breed them next. If not, reload your save.

11) Now feed 10 Sylkis Greens to either Blue or Green Chocobo and race it at the Gold Saucer. You must win 9 times.

12) Now breed them together for a Black Chocobo. Feed 10 Sylkis Greens to the Black Chocobo and win 12 races at Gold Saucer.

Note: If you struggle to get all 12 wins, know this requirement is across both Chocobo you breed - so move onto the next step and race that Chocobo until you have 12 wins between them. Things get a lot more difficult in S Class!

13) Catch 1 Chocobo near Iclcle Inn. They must be only accompanied by Jumping enemies.

14) Save your game before adding it to the stable. It must be the opposite (male or female) to the Black Chocobo.

15) Once you have won 12 races between the two, breed them for the Gold Chocobo.

With the 3x speed option on later ports to speed through the races, this process takes less time than you think.

The Gold Chocobo is also the best racing Chocobo. Don’t forget to feed them Sylkis Greens to improve their stats!
