The PyroMAT® system is an animal-free test that uses human monocytic cells to mimic the human reaction to pyrogens. Based on the monocyte activation test (MAT), this pyrogen test detects both endotoxin and non-endotoxin pyrogens in an in vitro assay, whereas the limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) test can detect only endotoxins.
Since July 1st, 2025, the Rabbit Pyrogen Test (RPT) is banned from European Pharmacopoeia (PH. Eur.) and the Ph. Eur. endorses the Monocyte Activation Test (MAT) as the official replacement for the Rabbit Pyrogen Test (RPT).
