This study examines how spousal support and strain influence various health and well-being outcomes in older married adults over time. Using longitudinal data from the Health and Retirement Study (n = 7,788, Mage = 64.2), researchers analyzed 35 aspects of physical health, health behaviors, psychological well-being, distress, and social factors. Findings show that spousal support is linked to higher psychological well-being and lower distress and loneliness, while spousal strain is associated with lower well-being and increased distress and loneliness. Although the effects were generally small, the study highlights the role of marital dynamics in shaping psychological health in later life.
