Female high school students who had family meals more often tended to have lower risk for substance use, including less frequent use of alcohol, cannabis, and cigarettes. This association was unique to family meals, even after accounting for parental support, family cohesion, and daily experiences getting along with parents and spending leisure time with family each day. These results suggest that having frequent meals as a stable family ritual and that aspects of the family meal, such as disclosure during the meal or time spent preparing and attending the meal, may reduce substance use risk for female adolescents.
