Imagine a library that took three months to burn, its smoke blackening the sky for weeks, like the Library of Ashurbanipal, which housed thousands of clay tablets with ancient knowledge.
The Library of Ashurbanipal and the Mayan Codices are two examples of ancient knowledge repositories that were lost to history, with the former destroyed in a fire and the latter deliberately burned by Spanish conquistadors.
The Mayan Codices, beautiful screenfold books made from fig tree bark, were seen as "lies of the devil" by the Spanish and were burned in a massive auto-da-fé, with only four partially preserved codices surviving.
These lost libraries contained knowledge of astronomy, medicine, mathematics, and history, including the Epic of Gilgamesh, and their destruction has left us with only fragments of the past.
The loss of these libraries is a staggering reminder of the fragility of human knowledge and the devastating impact of cultural vandalism, with many questions remaining about what could have been learned from the missing texts.
