Nest Aware Review - Is it worth getting?

Going all in with a Nest Cam and Nest Aware subscription means that you get the most peace of mind for the area that you’re monitoring with your Nest products. It’s going to cost you a bit though.

However, if you opt out of Nest Aware after the free trial period, you’ll have spent $200-$300 dollars on cameras that are basically a step up form a webcam attached to an old computer.

Without Nest Aware, you basically retain all the hardware features of the camera such as watching live video, 2-way communication and the occasional notification that something is going on in that room.

In the next few paragraphs, I’m going to:
breakdown the different features of Nest Aware
figure out how much it's going to cost over two years
a cheaper alternative
what happens when you re-subscribe

So if you’re not exactly sure what Nest Aware is, it is the cloud portion of the Nest Cam. Nest describes it as a boost of intelligence for your Nest Cam. I call it a boost of sales for Alphabet, the parent company of Nest as well as Google.

Let’s elaborate on these features a bit more.

For the cloud storage, based on the plan, you either have a 10 day or 30 day backup of 24/7 video recording. This is going to be handy for the occasional time that you *think something has happened.

Without Nest Aware, you get 5 hours of activity. Not videos, just tiny clips that show you something has happened. Sort of. If you’re never home, the 10 or 30 day cloud storage feature is going to be handy on days where your house get’s broken into at 9 in the morning and you don’t know that happened till 6pm. Then you can go back into time and find out what happened.

But let this sink in. You’ve just spent $200-$300 dollars on a Nest Cam and it without Nest Aware, it has done almost nothing to help you in the off chance that something bad happens.

Sharing videos and time lapses. This is a handy feature that allows you to share whatever good or bad thing that’s going on in your home. This is going to be the most important feature when it comes to keeping your home safe.

Onto the next feature which are the activity zones. Being able to set activity zones is quite handy especially if you’re using a Nest Camera to monitor a larger room.

If you’ve watched my Nest Cam Indoor and Cam IQ review, you’ll know that the facial recognition is a big selling point for me. It is a neat feature. But the question I have to ask myself is: How important is it to recognize faces In the general scheme of monitoring your home for security purposes?

So that's Nest Aware. For me, nothing really stands out with this service.

So how much will it cost to run for two years?

First of all, you’ll need to buy the cameras so for the Nest Cam IQ and Indoor, you’re going to spend $500 USD’s. With each camera, you get 30 days free of the 10-Day Nest Aware subscription. This why this scenario is two years and one month, to make the math a bit easier.

Over two years, in total, this is going to cost you $800 USD for the 10-Day plan and $1600 for the 30-Day plan. Is your peace of mind worth that much money over two years? For me personally, it isn’t because I know I can get basically the same functionality at a lower cost.

Here’s the last thing I’ll say about Nest Aware. If you’re thinking that you can sign up for Nest Aware after something has happened, well, you can’t. Which makes sense to me but given the how much Nest is asking you to spend, I was thinking *maybe this was a feature? Sorry, you can’t game Nest Aware I guess.
