8. SOUNDBITE: (English) Brigadier Richard Nugee, Chief spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF):
"I would suggest it was a year of two halves. In the first half, the Taliban believed their own rhetoric and believed that NATO, responsible for security across the whole country, would not fight. So they took us on in a place of their choosing, in a hard fight, and they lost."

10. SOUNDBITE: (English) Brigadier Richard Nugee, Chief spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF):
"We've got the total for this year which is 58 (ISAF soldiers killed) by our reckoning. We're just checking... but I don't have the figures for 2005 in front of me but I can get hold of them."

STORYLINE:
The chief NATO spokesman in Afghanistan on Wednesday said that the number one issue that needed to be addressed in 2007 was the high number of civilians killed during operations involving the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
But Brigadier Richard Nugee, the Chief spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) also said he believed the force was winning its fight against the Taliban, and that the Taliban were losing support among the local population.
"In the first half, the Taliban believed their own rhetoric and believed that NATO, responsible for security across the whole country, would not fight. So they took us on in a place of their choosing, in a hard fight, and they lost," Nugee told reporters at a news conference in Kabul.
Asked about ISAF casualties for 2006, Nugee said 58 soldiers were killed.
