"Music Training and Child Development"
"In this talk, I focus on the idea that learning music formally may transfer into other human activities. Many of us have heard, for example, that music education may assist in the development of mathematical or reading competencies in children. Yet, when we examine scientific literature on the topic, it becomes evident that the associations between music learning and child development are much more complex than most people appear to believe. The talk focuses on data collected for the purpose of a longitudinal study on music, brain and child development; a collaboration between researchers from the University of Southern California, the LA Philharmonic, the community organization Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA) and the music program Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA). We followed three groups of same-aged children for five consecutive years: children in the music program, children involved in collective sports modalities, and a control group. All children were 6-7 years old in the beginning of the study. Here, I present and discuss data relative to five main areas: singing, vocal improvisation, rhythmic entrainment, socioemotional development and parents’ perceptions of children’s participation in music over the course of time. I also offer implications for music education and future research. "
