Welcome to SuperCut Episode 2 of Courtland, Minnesota!

Today’s episode is a huge milestone for the series and one I’ve been looking forward to since the beginning — because after an entire year of building, planting, harvesting, and preparing, it’s finally time to bring in our very first herd of dairy cows! This is the moment that officially kicks off operations at our brand-new Minnesota MEGA Dairy Farm, and it’s going to be a big day filled with a ton of exciting work around the yard and the fields.

To kick things off today, I’ll be jumping into the pickup and heading down to the dairy farm to make the biggest livestock purchase we’ve made so far. We’re going all-in and bringing home 898 Holstein dairy cows, all around 18 months old and ready to start producing milk almost immediately. I could have gone the cheaper route by starting with calves, but that would have meant months of waiting before seeing any production — and thanks to the success we’ve had in our first year, we’ve got enough funds to do this the right way from the start. So, it’s time to make that purchase and fill up both of our new cow barns with our first ever herd of Holsteins!

Once our cows are delivered and settled into their new home, we’ll be shifting focus over to the commodity shed, which is going to act as the main mixing and storage hub for our dairy operation. Inside, we’ve already got our Straw and Hay bales neatly stacked in storage, and I’ve also invested in a couple of new machines to make the feed process a whole lot smoother. The first is our brand new Caterpillar wheel loader, which I’ll be using to load up Straw, Hay, Silage, and Mineral Feed into our International TMR mixing truck. The second piece of equipment is the Hillco twine remover, which will let us break down those big bales and convert them into loose Straw and Hay that we can easily move around with the loader.

Before we start mixing, I’ll also need to bring over a few loads of Silage from the bunkers. We’ll use one of our semi trucks and a dump trailer to haul it across the yard and start building up a nice stockpile inside the commodity shed. Once we’ve got everything in place — Silage, Hay, Straw, and Mineral Feed — we can finally start mixing up some fresh TMR and running loads over to each of the cow barns until both feeding troughs are completely topped off.

After our new cows are settled, fed, and happy, we’ll be turning our attention back out to the fields. Our workers are finishing up the last bit of Hay from our first cut, so I’ll be helping wrap that up, haul the rest of the bales back to storage, and get everything organized for the next phase
