Welcome to Episode 2 of Reading, Minnesota!

In today’s episode, we’re officially kicking off our first real day of farming on this brand new Minnesota map, and a lot has happened since the last episode!

Right after finishing the farm build in Episode 1, we were sitting at just under $17 million in the bank, and since then I’ve been extremely busy off camera. I’ve spent well over $10 million putting together our starter equipment fleet for Year 1, carefully selecting machines that fit the region, fit the scale of the operation, and still leave us plenty of room to upgrade and grow as this series continues. As of right now, we’re sitting on just under $7 million remaining, and that money will go toward buying more land, purchasing our first 1,000 head of cattle, and picking up any additional equipment we may need as the season unfolds.

To kick things off today, we’re going to jump back into our Chevy Silverado and take a full walkthrough of the farm yard. I’ll give you a complete tour of the sheds and show off all of the equipment we’ll be running to start this series. There’s a good mix of brands and machine sizes — some newer, some a little older — but everything was chosen with purpose. This setup gives us a strong start without going completely overkill right away, and it sets us up perfectly for future upgrades as the farm continues to expand.

Once we’ve checked out the new equipment purchases it'll be time to fire up a couple of our new tractors and hit the fields for the first time! Year 1 is all about feed production, and the main crop we’ll be focusing on is Corn. The goal is to feed our cattle primarily with Silage, and later on in their finishing stages we’ll be running a TMR ration that includes Corn as well. That means we’re going to need a lot of acres planted, harvested, and stored if we want this beef operation to run smoothly.

We’ll be starting with the 200-acre field that surrounds our farm, which is currently empty and ready to be prepared for planting. Before we put any seed in the ground, though, we need to get our nitrogen levels up. To do that, we’ll be breaking out some of our brand new Anhydrous Ammonia equipment for the first time. I’ve picked up two John Deere 2510H nutrient applicators, each pulling anhydrous tanks, and we’ll be running them across the entire field to get it properly fertilized ahead of planting.

While the anhydrous application gets underway, we’ll also need to head back to the farm yard, fire up a semi truck, and make a trip into town to refill our seed tender trailer. Once that’s done, we’ll get our John Deere DB60 24-row planters loaded up and ready to plant our very first crop here on the farm!
